Operation

Chestnut Thrill

Mission Objectives

  • Fly to a supermarket to pick up food that may be shared with other pilots in a park. Bring a stove if you want to make it hot.
  • All ships in the battalion are in flight during official sunset time: 19:37.
  • Circumnavigate Chestnut Hill Reservoir, and land in Cassidy Park: spacetime coordinates 42.33526530326313, -71.15235544056674.
  • Play at least one lawn game - We've got Mölkky. Bring other lawn games if you like.
  • Fly home after we have our fun: all surviving pilots must be on the landing pad between 2200 (10 pm) to 2300 (11pm).

Mission Summary

According to our extensive archives and according to the admiral's spotty memory of his tour of duty, SCUL chopped where SCUL has not chopped before - the scenic wormhole around the Chestnut Hill Nebula and its environs. We launched at an early hour while the daystar was still burning, and flew a wiggly path behind the stellar navigation of DrClaw, before stopping in a goose-covered park for a picnic and some lawn games.

The Thrill of the Chill is that warm and fuzzy feeling you get from a mission without stress, that is under 20 light years, doesn't involve STs, unwelcomed radiation, or mechanicals, and delivers tasty snax and friendly folks. This mission did not disappoint!

We launched from Fort Anwterp with the sun on our backs and the funk in the air. Dr. Claw deftly navigated us through the back starpaths of the Brookline System, and the local civis were super posi. We had first touchdown at a local Luna Market where ice cream molecules of different varieties were consumed at an alarming rate, yet no one ate a Klondike bar in under two minutes in order acquire another Klondike bar. We then made our way to the destination, Chestnut Hill reservoir.

At precisely 19:37 hours, the daystar shift transited the fleet and day became night. As according to the sonic disruption frequency plan, a tribute song for the passing of Olivia Newton John played. Start the video now to set the mood for what lies ahead for this story.

After completing the loop, we settled in on a patch of goose-less but perhaps not poop-less lawn. Pilots shared snax and two games of Mölkky were played. Skunk and Red Squirrel won respectively. Paper airplanes were flown and somehow all the watermelon was consumed but not all the apples masquerading as peaches.

Tango intercepted us and we made contact with some civilians interested in HARVs and blinky lasers. The Admiral and Syntax Error did a demonstration of the Age Old Question of "How do you get up on that thing?" We met a nice guy named Jay as well as a recently transplanted gang by the name of something that starts with a D-(?). The Thrill of the Chill dampened our ability to remember the full name of the gang, but they did request a shout out to Brooklyn. Seemed like a solidly friendly crew - so, Shout out to Brooklyn!

The return trip was smoooth sailing. Tango traveled back with us on a Bomber without a Bombardier. We didn't lose any pilots on the return trip and were met by friendly waves of festive Saturday night spectators as well as a bouncy castle that seemed to be rocking out to its own tunes in the dark corner of the Fort Antwerp parking lot. We had an early landing of 10:07 pm, well within mission parameters. Mission Success!!
